AI visibility for agencies: how to explain it to clients
A plain way to explain AI visibility to clients, set honest expectations, and report on it without overpromising.
If you run a marketing agency, your clients have probably started asking some version of “Are we showing up in ChatGPT?” It is a reasonable question, and a tricky one to answer well. This guide is for account managers who want to explain it clearly, without jargon and without promises they can’t keep.
Start with what the client already sees
Most owners have tried it themselves. They asked ChatGPT for the best business like theirs, and either they weren’t named or a competitor was. Start there. The conversation is not about a new marketing channel; it is about an answer their customers are already reading.
A plain explanation
Something like this works for most clients:
“When someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, it reads a handful of websites in the background and writes a short answer naming a few businesses. It picks up names from directories, review sites, articles and Google, as well as your own website. We can measure how often you are named, and see which sources it relies on. Then we can work on the ones where you are missing or described wrongly.”
Set expectations early
Three points are worth saying before you show any numbers:
- Nobody can guarantee a recommendation. Not you, not us, not anyone selling it. The AI companies control their answers.
- Answers vary. The same question can produce a different list tomorrow. That is why results are counted over many runs, and why small changes between checks can be noise.
- Results take time. Fixes such as a new directory listing or a corrected profile can take weeks to show up in answers, and some never do.
Clients respect this. It also protects you when a number moves the wrong way.
Use one number, then explain it
Lead with the AI Mention Rate: out of all the answers checked, how many named the client. It is simple, it can be compared over time, and it falls into one of three bands. Then use the rest of the report to explain why: who was named instead, which sources were cited, what was said about the client and whether it was accurate.
Turn findings into work you already do
Most of the fixes are familiar agency work:
- completing and correcting directory and review profiles
- rewriting service pages so they name treatments, areas and customer types plainly
- getting the client into editorial lists and local press
- making details consistent across every listing
The report gives you evidence for which of these to do first.
Report on change, not promises
Re-check on a regular schedule with the same questions and compare. Show the change since last time, and be honest when a change is within normal variation. Over a few months, that record is more persuasive than any claim.
