Is this the same as SEO? What overlaps and what’s different
How being named by AI assistants relates to search engine optimisation, and where the two part ways.
If you already pay someone for SEO, a fair question is whether AI visibility is the same work under a new name. Partly. There is real overlap, and there are also differences that matter for how you spend your time and budget.
What SEO is for
Search engine optimisation is about where your website appears in a list of links on Google. The goal is to be on the first page for the searches your customers make, so that they click through to your site.
What changes with AI answers
An AI assistant doesn’t give a list of ten links. It gives one written answer, usually naming a few businesses, and the person often doesn’t click anywhere. If you are not in that answer, there is no second page to scroll to.
The answer is also assembled from several sources at once. Your website may be one of them, but so are directories, review sites, magazine lists and forum threads. You can have a well-optimised website and still be left out, because the AI took its list from somewhere else.
Where they overlap
- A clear, accurate website helps both. Pages that state what you do, where, and for whom are easy for search engines and AI assistants to understand.
- Your Google Business Profile matters to both. It feeds Google’s map results and is one of the sources AI assistants cite most often in our scans.
- Reviews matter to both. Recent reviews that describe real services help on Google and give AI something specific to repeat.
- Technical basics matter to both. A site that loads, can be crawled, and doesn’t block the relevant crawlers is a starting point for everything else.
Where they differ
| SEO | AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| What you measure | Your position in search results | Whether you are named in the answer, and how often |
| Main focus | Your own website | Everywhere the AI reads about you |
| How results appear | A ranked list of links | A few names in a paragraph |
| How stable it is | Fairly stable week to week | Varies between runs of the same question |
| Accuracy | Not usually an issue | AI can repeat outdated or wrong details |
The last row is easy to overlook. SEO rarely has to deal with a search engine describing your business incorrectly. AI assistants sometimes do: an old address, a closed branch, a treatment you no longer offer. Fixing that is part of the work.
So do you need both?
If your SEO is in good shape, some of the groundwork is already done. What an AI visibility check adds is a measurement of the answer itself: who is named, how often, what is said about you, and which sources it came from. That often points to work outside your website that an SEO plan doesn’t cover, such as a missing directory listing or an outdated profile.
